This portion of yoga is similar to hatha-yoga which deals entirely with the physical body. The result of the hatha-yoga is simply to make men live long in good health. The lotus sitting posture holds the pelvis in a level position by rotating the hips and legs in an outward position. This, in turn, places a straightening force on the spine.
When the breathing step of yoga, pranayama, is applied to a horizontal pelvis, a strong force that further diminishes the spinal curvature is generated. Lotus positioning of the legs, combined with proper breathing exercises, generates the straight spine required by the Raja yoga.
This practice is done while sitting and must be practiced long and often as is the case with any effective exercise program. The hatha-yoga describes other physical maneuvers that strengthen posture. Like other physical exercise programs, reversal of the postural benefits occurs rapidly when discontinued.
A significant obstruction to the practice of yoga is an unhealthy body. When the Lotus position or posture was first demonstrated to me, knee pain when sitting in a very basic cross legged position became intense within a few minutes, such that I couldn't or wouldn't consider any regular practice of yoga.
