Theta-Orthotics Science  All devices that control foot function, supinate the foot, as we walk, run, and stand. Supination of the foot restores the arches and moves your weight toward the outside of the foot during gait.

Supination of the foot, maintained by an orthotic, creates a chain reaction that rotates the leg, decreases pelvic tilt, and straightens the spine. The amount of supination generated by an orthotic determines the benefit of the treatment.

“Functional” orthotics are basically angular wedges, strategically placed so as to change the “specific angle” of support, during weight bearing gait. Patent literature over the last 200 years describes orthotics with two basic types of wedges. Some orthotic designs use both types of wedges, MLA and MET, most use just one.

Theta is a Greek Letter used in math to represent the value of an Angle.

Theta is the Angle of the wedge measured in any Orthotic Device.

Angles are defined by Three Points in the Same Plane.

Two “Specific Angles” (Theta) have been identified and defined.

One specific angle ABC, located at the apex of the Medial Longitudinal Arch (MLA).

The second specific angle was identified DBE, directly under the First METatarsal.

Clinical orthotic research with quantified “specific angle” design (Theta) over the last 30 years, has taught me a lot about orthotic design and human biomechanics.  No one concept is more important than;  More Theta = Less Pronation = Less Pain.   Brent A. Jarrett D.P.M.
