Documented Research: THETA-Orthotics: Thirty years in the clinic, twelve on the internet, and thousands of patients. Long term clinical cases document the effectiveness of this unique treatment for chronic foot, knee, and back pain. Avoid surgery with cost-effective treatment for common flat feet, inherited high arches, and many chronic medical conditions caused or aggravated by walking and standing.  Brent A Jarrett DPM

If you thik you are beyond help you are wrong. The only effective treatment for true high arched feet. Understand the science of Theta orthotics.

Orthotics: All devices that control foot function, supinate the foot, as we walk, run, and stand. Supination of the foot, creates a chain reaction of biomechanical events, with external rotation of the leg, decreased pelvic tilt, and a straighter spine. The amount of supination generated by any foot control device ultimately determines the benefit of the treatment. (Theta)

Theta is a symbol used in math to define the value of an angle.

Theta = Angle of the Wedge (s)

Functional orthotics are angular wedges, strategically placed so as to change the angle of the support, during weight bearing gait. Literature over the last 200 years describes orthotics with two basic types of wedges. Some orthotic designs use both types of wedges, mid-foot and forefoot, most use one.

  • Theta is the angle of the wedge in degrees.
  • Theta is directly related to the amount of supination of the foot as we walk, run and stand.
  • Theta is the amount of correction in any foot control device.
  • Theta determines the benefits of any orthotic treatment.

Angles are defined by three points.

In the early eighties my first attempts to quantify the “specific angles” of functional orthotic design with math, using three defined points in the same plane, were unsuccesful .

This photo, with Points ABC defined, is taken from a contoured Roadure plastic plate, pressed over personal plaster cast impressions, take in a non weight bearing “STJ neutral” position. (Clasical Root Concepts).

Points ABC were defined and quantified, then tested in hundreds of clinical cases, from 1983 to 1988.

MLA and Metatarsal Angles

Theta research defines Two “specific angles”. One angle, defined by three points in the frontal place, located at the apex of the Medial Longitudinal Arch. The other functional angle was identified, and three points define the frontal plane location, directly under the First metatarsal.

For more than twenty years, Theta-Orthotics with two quantified wedges, have been produced and tested clinically. Urethane rubber orthotics taken from casts of a finite number of human models, custom fit to each individual using weight bearing lateral x-rays and or biofoam impressions, document the functional relationship between Theta and foot function and chronic pain.

The following important concepts are documented over 30 years of clinical research, with Theta angular correction:

  • Both rear foot and forefoot wedges are beneficial when used independently, and optimally when used together.
  • Chronic painful medical conditions, believed to be caused or aggravated by ambulation, improve with Theta treatment over time.
  • Every degrees of noncompressable angular correction has the potential to change foot function and reduce chronic body pain.
  • Every 5 degrees of Theta angular correction changes the functional forces sufficient to generate noticible clinical improvement.
  • Close to 40 degrees of rearfoot and 20 degrees of forefoot correction were identified as the theoretical optimal for healthy bodies.
  • Clinical benifits can be oserved with as little as 12 degree of rearfoot and 6 degrees of forefoot correction in low (flat) arched patients.
  • Treatment with correction levels above 22 degrees are necessary for clinical benefits in high ( cavo-varus) arched patients.
  • Progressive treatment to highly therapeutic levels of Theta correction will resolve even highly resistent, long persisting conditions.
  • Progressive treatment permits succesfull treatment in most all patients with Morton’s Neuromas, Heel Pain, Knee Pain. Even patients with prior failed surgical attempts,
  • On average (17) Prescriptions Orthotics have 5 degrees more correction than “generic “OTC” orthotics/arch supports (12).

Digital Theta concepts, theorized originally with solid rubber Theta-Orthotics more than 20 years ago are now our only custom product being tested clinically. With the aid of advanced digital technology, these same quantified urethane rubber orthotics have been digitaly designed using basic principles of geometry. Contours are now based on mathematical formulas , not human models, and can be integrated in to basic shoe design and produced with significantly less human effort.
