Erect Posture

What is is? Technically most physicians who document postural change would say that when the ear, center of the shoulder, center of the hip, all line up vertically an erect and proper spinal position exists.

Is it even Normal? In fact such erect position occurs only briefly , if at all, during the teenage period of body development.

How does it change? The developing strength associated with our body mass existing in gravity pulls floppy infant form into an upright and at least semi erect position.

What causes it to change? Eventually body mass becomes great enough, that given a structural deficit inherent in the lower leg of almost all human beings, it now begins to rotate the body in, increasing spinal curvature.

How fast does it change. Generally our body goes through these structural changes, assuming death by natural cause, for 50 to 150 years.  Biblical references suggest that before Moses it may have taken as long as 900 years to complete.

Are these changes part of the aging process or can it be altered with exercise or any other form of treatment? Yoga and frequently practiced exercises and breathing techniques and been documented to extend the process by which our body structure first builds up then breaks down for 50 even 75 years more than what would otherwise be expected.

The change in forces responsible for the erect spinal alignment observed in the 55 year old man to the left are the direct result of 20 years of treatment with 40 degree theta-orthotics during all weight-bearing activity.  There is no other treatment or technique know to man that will produce these changes from normal postural development.
